Being a working artist is about so much more than simply producing your work. If you are a working artist, you are running a business!

I have been self-employed, making the majority of my income from art sales, for almost five years. I was able to easily make this transition from full-time ad agency employee to now, full-time artist largely because I have a professional background in advertising. On numerous occasions I have said, “I can’t imagine trying to be an artist without having worked in advertising – I actually know how to market and sell my work.”

Unless you’re already working in advertising or marketing, you’re probably not somehow going to acquire seven years’ worth of on-the-job knowledge on your own. And I get it even though I am truly interested in the business side of my business, I would always rather be painting. In an effort to help artists trying to figure out how to sell their work and how the heck to become a full-time artist, I have written three resource guides. They lay out for you the same step-by-step path I took – only sharing the things that worked, of course! – and will arm you with the business and marketing savvy that you’ll definitely need as you chase this dream.
